Portrait of three generations of Bateman men. Thomas I (left) came from England in 1844. He lived in SH Lot 17, Conc. 2 (later belonging to Kenneth Sturgeon) and died in 1891.
Thomas Adrian Bateman (seated, centre) later married Ethel Ralston on 1 November 1911.
Thomas Bateman II (right) married Mary Osler and became the grandfather of Harold Bell. He was born in 1830 and lived in NH Lot 14, Conc. 1 (later belonging to Don Sawyer). Also pictured is Thomas Bateman III (standing, centre)., IHS1073

Threshing machine; Frank Cowan Threshing machine shots- the era of owning threshing machine, driving it with a tractor, before combines. Notes from Don Beatty and John Cowan talking on the tape. "What do you have on this, Frank? My son, Andrew Cowan, is pitching off. I think it is possibly the last time we threshed at the barn bridge with the separator in the barn and the unloading right at the barn door. I think this was especially taken; one of the last picture you could find of that kind of threshing. I thought it was a little modern because of the height of the wagon. That wagon was converted to rubber by that time? Yes, that was a high wagon at one time; a high wagon cut down and rubber put on. What kind of power did you have? Were you threshing with the W4? It was an Alis Chalmers. where is that separator now; is it still around? Yes, that separator is still behind the driving shed at home. I wish someone would take it for the taking., IHS744

Threshing Team

Photo of a team of men assembled beside a self-propelled steam engine and its attached threshing machine with self-feeder. Pictured in the top right is Robert Thompson with Harry Thompson beside him. On the bottom left is likely Calvin Boyd holding a grain box. The rest of the men are unknown. Threshing, which separates the inedible chaff from the edible part of grain, occurred after harvest and before winnowing. Threshing bees were held because the work was intensive and equipment was often shared within the community., IHS3529
